Who is Leodegar Chilla Tenga?

Leodegar CHilla Tenga

One of the finest players in Tanzania’s history, Leodegar Chilla Tenga is a respected administrator and representative, leading the Tanzanian Football Federation as president since 2005.

It’s been a successful second act for Tenga, who has worked hard on development projects and increased the level of football in Tanzania and East Africa. He had a spell as secretary general of the TFF between 1988 and 1990 and was a member of the National Sports Council from 1990 - 2002 and its vice-chairman from 2000 - 2002.

In 2007, he was elected to a four-year term as chairman of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), which is the organiser of the Senior Challenge Cup - the oldest tournament in Africa, the host continent for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

Under his leadership, Tanzania have climbed from 175th in the FIFA / Coca-Cola World Ranking at the end of 2004 to 93rd last summer and 108th in the run-up to South Africa 2010.

Re-elected in 2008, the close watcher of the game has seen his Taifa Stars put together solid qualifying campaigns for the 2008 and 2010 CAF Africa Cup of Nations and a run to the inaugural African Nations Championship final tournament in 2009.

Tanzania has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, and the only time they graced the Cup of Nations, Tenga was a standout. The national team captain from 1977 to 1981, he led them to a qualification victory over Zambia, who would go on to finish third in the next tournament, and to a respectable performance in the final event.

Player:1974-1976: Young Africans FC; 1976–1981: Pan African FC; 1975–1981: Tanzania National Football Team. Manager: 1981-1984: Pan African FC.

Leodegar Tenga is a member of FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG).
The TSG has been present at every FIFA competition for the last 40 years, identifying trends and providing informed analysis on all the technical and tactical advances the game has witnessed in that time.

Only recently Tenga has been elected to the CAF Executive Committe body as a member during the federation’s assembly held in Khartoum Sudan, a position that puts him at the top table as the most decorated football administrator in the East and Central African region.
